Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter of their family. After her father died in the role of a carnival barker when Ruth was just a young girl She was required to support the family working both as a cleaner and a server. Ruth went to school and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. But she quit school after just two years to take on a acting career. The path she chose was not without obstacles. In New York, her first task was to pose stills for crime magazines, the theatre work that she longed to do was abyssal. After a brief period as a hat-wearing club girl, she decided to return home and quit her position. As an usherette, she worked in the mornings and appeared at the New England Repertory Company by evening, her first ever permanent acting job. Drama studies led her to graduate from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
